35 Chicago mid-century modern furniture and vintage antique dealers

Several years ago, I had to get rid of all my furniture when I moved back to Chicago from California. When your moving “van” is a Toyota Corolla, it can’t come with you across country. This meant leaving behind many great pieces that I’d tracked down from dealers along the central coast. Some of it I sold. Some ended up in the Hall Madden San Francisco showroom. Other pieces I gifted to friends.

Returning to Chicago presented the opportunity to start anew at decorating my apartment. And for several years, I took my time searching for the right pieces from a wide variety of shops and dealers. But the one common thread was I sought out vintage and antique furniture.

I’ve been drawn to vintage furniture for several reasons. First, the quality tends to be much higher than what you can find today on the mass market. Second, the design of so many mid-century modern pieces appeals to the eye. It never feels generic. Finally, the price is right. Sure, they might have some imperfections, but I’ve never regretted the money I spent on something old versus what I spent on something brand new. The new stuff just never seemed to have the character I wanted.

I found it easiest to find and follow dealers specializing in mid-century modern furniture, artwork and antiques through their Instagram accounts. At this point, not much more can go on my walls or into my rooms, but I figure this list will be useful to others. Happy hunting!
